He doesn’t name many names, but Miley and Iggy were unable to escape the wrath, and are specifically mentioned as guilty.
“You’ve exploited and stolen the music, the moment, the magic, the passion, the fashion. You toy with the culture, the culture was never yours to make better. You’re Miley, you’re Elvis, you’re Iggy Azalea, fake and so plastic, you’ve heisted the magic. You’ve taken the drums and the accent you rapped in. You’re branded ‘hip-hop,’ it’s so fascist and backwards.”
It doesn’t stop there either. The 32-year-old goes on to sing about people who have fought against equality when it’s “convenient,” just to be “liked” or “accepted.” Just take a listen to the whole song above and see for yourself — it’s intense. “This song is the outcome of ongoing dialogue with the musicians, activists and teachers within our community in Seattle and beyond,” Macklemore wrote in a message with the song’s debut. “Their work and engagement was essential to the creative process.”
Meanwhile, Iggy caught wind of the song thanks to a fan on Twitter, and she wasn’t too thrilled about it. “He shouldn’t have spent the last 3 yrs having friendly convos and taking pictures together at events etc if those were his feelings,” she responded. Oh man, the war is on!
