Everyone at the Chicago hospital is willing to stand up for what they believe — especially the head of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. In this exclusive sneak peek, Sharon Goodwin actually puts her job at risk in order to help a patient who needs a transplant, and tensions are definitely rising.
Right in the beginning of the clip, exclusive to HollywoodLife.com Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) receives stem cell transplants for a patient — but soon after she’s interrupted by a higher up with bad news. “The hospital’s decided to shut down Christie Pearson’s transplant,” organ dealer Peter (Marc Grapey) says, explaining that the patient’s brother has actually broken the law by putting together a fundraiser. Nothing’s black and white on Chicago Med, that’s for sure.[hl_amazon_single url=”http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01A7IKBLC/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B01A7IKBLC&linkCode=as2&tag=hollywoocom-20&linkId=TVRCFBNIJPNHFDXO” header=”Watch” title=”Chicago Med”]
Of course, it’s illegal to offer someone compensation for donating an organ — so when a patient’s brother holds a fundraiser for the donor, the hospital is forced to cancel the operation altogether. “It still puts the hospital and staff at risk for hefty fines, sanctions, I mean even imprisonment,” Peter says. Sharon’s argument is a good one: “It’s a kid doing a good dead; he’s a minor!”
Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) also chimes in to defend Christie and her “impossible situation,” before Sharon tells Peter that the patient will die if she does not get these transplants.
The legal issues are of course rising now on Chicago Med, as well as Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire, with Dick Wolf officially adding another show to the series, titled Chicago Law. We will slowly begin to meet that cast in the respective shows, so it’s possible Peter will be one of those — he has also appeared on Law & Order: SVU.
Tune in to Chicago Med on Jan. 26 at 9PM ET.
