So sad, yet so touching! Hundreds of fans lined up to pay their respects to Celine Dion’s late husband, Rene Angelil, on Jan. 21. However, the most memorable fan of all was Celine’s own mother, Thérèse Dion. See the 88-year-old front and center at the memorial, here.
It’s definitely true that a girl never stops needing her mother. That’s exactly what Thérèse Dion, legendary pop singer Celine Dion’s mom proved when, despite the cold, she made an epic appearance at Rene Angelil’s memorial visitation in Quebec. That’s what we call a beautiful mother-daughter moment. See the pic for yourself, here!
Thérèse was an absolute vision bundled up in a long, black coat and sophisticated Chanel shoes as she made her way into the Notre-Dame Basilica in Old Montreal, Canada. She, along with hundreds of fans, went there to pay her respects to Rene, her daughter’s late husband of 21 years. And of course she was also there to show love and support for Celine!
Although Rene’s national funeral isn’t until tomorrow, Jan. 22, a visitation occurred on Jan. 21 to celebrate Rene’s life. Friends, relatives, and celebrities were the first to enter the church for the memorial, where they were greeted by Celine herself. The chapel was not immediately open to the public, but according to cbcnews, hundreds of mourners gathered outside in the cold starting at 5:45am for their turn to wish Rene’s widow well. That’s true dedication and we’re sure Celine appreciated it!
In fact, we know she appreciated it. The Canadian singer greeted mourners as she stood near her husband’s open coffin and accepted fans’ condolences. While she was supposed to stay for only 30 minutes, she ended up greeting well wishers for over two hours, according to Daily Mail. Rene, her longtime love, died on Jan. 14 at the age of 73 after a long battle with throat cancer.
This “Chapel of Rest” was open to the public from 2pm to 9pm and public figures such as Former Quebec Nordiques coach Michel Bergeron, Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre, and Canadian talk show host Julie Snyder, all showed up to say their final goodbyes to the music legend.
What’s even more touching is that the Montreal’s Notre Dame Basilica, also where the funeral is being held, is the same church Rene and Celine got married in back in 1994. We love that so many supporters showed up to honor Rene’s life and to offer their condolences to Celine.
There will be a “Celebration of Life” held Feb. 3, at the Caesars Palace Colosseum in Las Vegas from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. It’s the same theater where Celine performs her show, which she has suspended until Feb. 23 so she can take the proper time to mourn the loss of Rene, as well as her brother, Daniel Dion’s, who passed from the same throat cancer that took her husband’s life. Our hearts go out to Celine during her time of immense loss.
