It’s the final round of ‘American Idol’ auditions…forever! The last bunch of auditions went out with a bang, and the judges were blown away by one special audition.
American Idol is hitting us right in the feels, thanks to one of tonight’s auditions. In the Jan. 21 episode, judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. head to Atlanta, Philadelphia and San Francisco to give unknown talent one last shot to be heard, and as usual, the competition is stiff even at this stage. Find out who’s going to Hollywood!
In San Francisco, we learn that Brian Dale Brown, 27, from California, has auditioned for Idol 10 times! After doing hilarious comic impressions of Keith and Scooby-Doo, he sings “Unchained Melody” by Righteous Brothers and showcases his strong voice. Though his performance was a little over the top, the judges like it in the end and he finally gets that ticket!
Gina Baez, a young woman from New York, brings her tiny dog, Tinkerbell…and they wear matching glittery blue outfits! She does a strong a capella cover of Meghan Trainor‘s “Lips Are Movin”, but her voice isn’t interesting enough. “It wasn’t perfect when you were singing, and it’s just not right for American Idol,” JLo tells Gina. “I’m sorry, Sweetie.” Aww, it’s a no.
Ready for the feels? In Philadelphia, Melany Huber, 17, from Michigan, was diagnosed with cancer and has survived chemo, and her determination is so inspiring. She does a beautiful acoustic rendition of “Talking To The Moon” by Bruno Mars. “You have a storytelling quality,” Keith tells her. “I like everything I see,” Harry agrees. It’s three yeses — go, Melany!
Original Idol Kelly Clarkson‘s #1 fan, 22-year-old Justin Sullivan, sings “Stronger” (of course), but his cover doesn’t quite land. He’s a little pitchy at times, and he sounds good most of the time, but he’s not a male Kelly Clarkson…as much as he may like to be. Next!
Chynna Sherod, a 16-year-old from Connecticut, sings beyond her years. She does a beautiful acoustic version of “One Last Time” by Ariana Grande, and Keith loves her chill, laid-back vibe! JLo is thrilled to hand her a golden ticket, and it’s off to Hollywood. Can’t believe this girl is only 16.
In Atlanta, the crew celebrates Harry’s birthday and his co-judges surprise him with what he’s always wanted: an adorable little finger monkey for a pet! Next, Lillian Glanton, 15, is a singer-songwriter who lives on a poultry farm in Alabama. She does an original song called “Country Boyfriend” and plays acoustic guitar. Her voice “isn’t quite on the level” of what Harry is looking for, but JLo loves the song. It’s a yes from Keith and a no from Harry, but JLo breaks the tie and Lillian is going to Hollywood.
Kacye Haynes, 23, from Alabama, does a great acoustic version of “Brother” by NEEDTOBREATHE, and his story of how he’s overcome a drug addiction is inspiring. Keith says he lacks power, but JLo disagrees and thinks “there’s something special” here. Harry loves his voice and Kacye gets that ticket!
Zach Person, 18, is from Texas and he turns out to be an extremely talented guitar player. His cover of Gary Clark‘s “Next Door Neighbor Blues” is just incredible, and he’s got a super unique style! Harry mentions that it’s refreshing to see someone do their own thing with confidence, and it’s a resounding yes from all three judges.
Next up is Collette Lush, a 19-year-old from California with red hair that’s as fiery as her vocal range. She chooses “Who’s Lovin You” by Jackson 5 for her audition, and she totally slays the a capella cover! She might just be the next Carrie Underwood…or at least the next Idol! Then Avalon Young, 21, from San Diego, performs the Beyonce tune “XO” as she plays acoustic guitar. She has a lovely voice and Keith smiles and nods along the entire time! It’s a “yes” for both Collette and Avalon.
In San Francisco, Jaci Butler, 19, from Texas, picks Bruno Mars‘ “It Will Rain” for her audition, and she can clearly sing. She normally performs with an alternative band, but three yeses means that she’ll have the chance to make it as a soloist!
The very last audition of Season 15 is Manny Torres, a 20-year-old musician from Michigan is beyond excited to perform for the judges. “If Jennifer Lopez hands me that golden ticket, I probably will grab her hand along with it,” he tells the cameras before his audition. He plays acoustic guitar along with his cover of”This Love” by Maroon 5, and it’s really something special. He has tons of energy and a fun performance quality — it’s a yes!
HollywoodLifers, are you happy the auditions are finally over, or sad that this was everybody’s last chance to try out?
