Kanye West has mad respect for David Bowie…but is he preparing to honor the late singer with a tribute cover album!? Fans of the iconic musician are not thrilled about this report, and a petition to ban the record already has thousands of signatures. Yikes!
David Bowie fans do NOT want Kanye West, 38, recording their idol’s songs! Following the singer’s death, a report surfaced that Yeezy was going to release an entire album of himself covering David’s songs, and it sparked some major outrage. Did a fan’s petition change ‘Ye’s mind?!
Actually, no — it turns out, the cover album was never a thing to begin with, Kanye’s rep confirmed to TMZ. But, of course, before the denial was out there, fans caught wind of the original report, and a man named Peter Piranha created the petition to “Stop Kanye West recording Covers of David Bowie’s music.” The campaign creator asked for 15,000 petitions, and had already received more than 10,7000 by the morning of Jan. 20!
“David Bowie was one of the single most important musicians of the 20th and 21st century, it would be a sacrilege to let it be ruined by Kanye West,” Peter wrote. As it turns out, Kanye is in total agreement with the first part of that statement — after Bowie passed away earlier this month, he tweeted, “David Bowie was one of my most important inspirations, so fearless, so creative, he gave us magic for a lifetime.”
And fans of the rapper do NOT have to worry: He’s still hard at work on music of his own! His upcoming album SWISH will drop on Feb. 11, and he’s expected to drop new music on Fridays from now until then! So far, we’ve heard the songs “No More Parties In L.A.” and “Real Friends,” and it’s already left us wanting so much more. Kanye’s last album, Yeezy, came out in 2013, so new stuff is long overdue!
As Kanye prepares to release his new music, he’s spending the next few weeks of freedom by bonding with his new son, Saint West, who was just born in December. With the Grammys taking place just four days after the SWISH release, maybe we can expect Kanye to make his first big promotional appearance at the show?! And it’s likely (we’re hoping) we’ll see a tour in 2016, too!
HollywoodLifers, would you want to hear a Kanye West cover album of David Bowie’s biggest hits? Or are you glad it’s not happening?
