So scary! It has been over a month since Steve Harvey botched the coronation ceremony at the Miss Universe pageant, but it seems the fallout is still going on. While answering audience questions during his show on Jan. 19, the talk show host admit that the on-air flub was not only embarrassing, but also incredibly scary as he got angry insults and even death threats after the mistake. Watch it here!
For viewers at home, the coronation ceremony at the Miss Universe pageant was a cringe-worthy moment. But for The Steve Harvey Show host, the crowning and un-crowning of Ariadna Gutierrez, 22, (a.k.a Miss Colombia) was much more than just embarrassing — it was downright scary! When asked point blank by an audience member at his show on Jan. 19 if the blunder was a publicity stunt, Steve responded by revealing the real-life trauma he’s experienced in the pageant’s aftermath.
“See, here’s the part people don’t understand,” he began. “My family got death threats. They threatened my wife. They threatened my children. I mean, I had people camped outside my house — paparazzi. But when you get death threats, when you got to beef up security, when you got to put people around your house, I mean, that’s kind of crazy. It had gotten to that level of thinking. I just wouldn’t have brought that on myself. I’m perfectly comfortable with the fame level that I’m at and whatever God gave me. I’m cool where I’m at.”
Later on in the show, Steve actually brought Ariadna out for their first official sit-down since he was forced to take her crown after mistakingly naming her the winner back in December. In addition to rehashing their feelings about the devastating moment, Ariadna made sure to give Steve a piece of her mind. “You have to learn how to read cards, because it was on the card … You wanted me to win, you know?” she said. Steve immediately started to laugh and said he was glad he was now “off the hook.” She added: “If you see the videos I was laughing because I thought you were about to make a joke.” Yeah, there was definitely nothing funny about that moment.
While Ariadna remained super sweet about the whole thing, she did admit that it was the worst moment of her life and that she had hoped that she could be a co-winner with the actual winner Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. “In four minutes they destroy your dreams. They throw it in the bag and they throw it in the trash,” she told Univision. “They could’ve done it another way. I feel like it doesn’t matter to them, the feelings of a girl who has worked her whole life for a dream.”
