One of literature’s most incredible novels is coming to your TV screens in an all-new mini-series. Leo Tolstoy’s 19th century epic War & Peace, airing in four parts, begins on Jan. 18. The miniseries stars Lily James, Paul Dano and more. Here’s 5 essential things to know about War & Peace before grabbing your popcorn!
1. When and where will it air?
The first part of War & Peace will air Jan. 18 at 9:00 p.m. ET on A&E, History Channel and Lifetime. The following parts will air Jan. 25, Feb. 1 and Feb. 8.
2. Leo Tolstoy’s novel has everything — romance, scandal, war.
The novel follows the rise and fall of five aristocratic families in the early 1800s — the Bezukhovs, Bolkonskys, Drubetskoys, Kuragins and Rostovas — as Russia’s conflict with Napoleon Bonaparte worsens. From Andrei Bolkonsky and Natasha Rostova’s romance to Pierre Bezukhov’s massive wealth, War & Peace is grand in scale. From the intense war scenes to the passionate love scenes, War & Peace won’t disappoint if you’re looking for something exciting to watch.
3. The miniseries features some familiar faces.
Cinderella’s Lily James will play the beautiful Natasha Rostova. Paul Dano will play Pierre Bezukhov, and James Norton will play Prince Andrei Bolkonsky. Jim Broadbent will portray Andrei’s father Prince Bolkonsky, while Gillian Anderson will play Anna Pavlovna.
4. It’s not the first time the novel has been adapted.
Audrey Hepburn and Henry Fonda starred in the 1956 adaptation of War & Peace. A miniseries aired in 2007 and starred Clémence Poésy and Malcolm McDowell.
5. It’s already aired — in United Kingdom!
Three episodes of War & Peace have already aired in the United Kingdom on BBC One. The miniseries is being split into six episodes.
