The white as snow Oscar nominees field was a hot topic at the 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards Jan. 17. Several black actors and actresses used the event to make light of the fact that Hollywood’s biggest night will feature zero minorities in any of the main acting categories!
Leave it to the hilarious Anthony Anderson and his Blackish TV show wife Tracee Ellis Ross to bring some humor to the sad fact that the 20 contenders for lead and supporting actor and actress Oscars are all white for the first time since 1998. Even this year’s Academy Awards show host Chris Rock has referred to it as the “White B.E.T. Awards,” but Anthony and Tracee got in a hilarious dig at the fact during the CCA’s.
“A lot of actors who win the Critics’ Choice Awards go on to win the Academy Award,” Anthony remarked during their awards ceremony presentation banter. “Yes, so if you are nominated tonight, give yourself some applause as you could go on to win an Oscar,” Tracee replied.”For you Tracee, that means only half you will get to go to that show,” Anthony fired back, referring to the fact that Tracee is biracial, with her mother being the legendary Diana Ross and her white father is music business manager Robert Ellis Silberstein. “You didn’t get that, I missed,” Tracee said as the joke fell a little flat.
For the second year straight, the Academy has exclusively nominated white actors for the show’s top honors, while performances by actors of color or ethnicity in acclaimed and successful films like Straight Outta Compton and Creed got zero recognitions. Even the writers of the screenplay for Straight Outta Compton who were nominated for Oscars are white.
HollywoodLifers, what did you think about Anthony and Tracee’s joke, or about the sad fact that the Oscars are all white in noms again this year?
