Rory Feek posted a heartbreaking photo of his terminally ill wife, Joey Feek, hugging her best friend for what she fears is the last time. Joey and Julie Zamboldi have been inseparable for eight years, and Rory wrote a touching blog post about their painful last meeting.
As Joey Feek, 40, fights Stage IV cervical cancer, a new downturn in her health has her convinced that the end could be near. That’s why when best friend Julie Zamboldi was packing up to leave after staying with the family and caring for Joey for a month, she completely broke down; she thinks she’ll never see Julie again. Husband Rory Feek took an absolutely gut wrenching photo of their goodbye hug.
The photo shows Julie leaning over Joey’s hospital bed, wrapping her friend in her arms and cradling her shaved head. Julie shaved her own head as well in solidarity with Joey. It’s clearly an emotional moment. Rory wrote poignantly about the bond that Joey and Julie shared, and how “St. Jules” deserved her title.
“Joey’s best friend Julie has been here for a week and was supposed to leave this evening and fly back home to Oregon where she and her husband Joe live,” Rory wrote. “But this morning as I sat beside my wife, and Julie started packing her things… Joey’s tears began to fall. She was inconsolable. I put my arms around her and asked what was wrong. As her lips quivered and she tried to catch her breath, the tears streamed her cheeks and Joey said, “I don’t think I will ever see her again”…
Crazy enough, Julie and her husband became close to Joey and Rory because they were super fans! After seeing the couple at dozens of their shows, they all became close friends. Julie even runs the Joey+Rory fan club! It’s a bittersweet detail that Julie said their music helped with her healing after several of her friends died of cancer.
Rory wrote that in the time since Joey was diagnosed (October 2015), Julie has spent a significant amount of time with the family, traveling back and forth between Indiana and her home in Washington, “… not waiting for someone we love to die. But helping the woman we all love to live.”
Joey’s sorrow at having to say goodbye to her best friend is all for naught; it turns out that Julie just couldn’t see that face and say goodbye, either. “And so at the Indianapolis airport this evening , a plane will take off and Saint Jules (as Joey’s daddy calls her) won’t be on it. Instead, she will be be with her best friend,” Rory wrote.
