Lisa and John Robinson shocked the country when they appeared on the Today show to announce that they had one of the three winning tickets from the 1.5 billion Powerball drawing. We had to know more about this lucky couple, and what they’re doing with all this cash!
Three winners were confirmed after the Powerball lottery drawing on Wednesday, January 13. For the time being, only Lisa and John Robinson, of Munford, TN, have come forward with their confirmed golden ticket — and after they did it in such a big way, we had to know more about this spunky (and lucky!) couple! Read on for five facts about the new Powerball winners!
This is a big win for Tennessee schools
Lisa and John’s winning prize was a grand total of $528.8 million. Amazing! With that historic amount, the lattery has raised $28.9 million for Tennessee education programs, confirmed by TN Lottery president and CEO R. Hargrove. Amazing!
Lisa and John are getting practical with their money first

Though they’re now multi-millionaires, rich beyond what many could ever fathom, the couple doesn’t have immediate plans for crazy luxury items. Instead, they’re going to first pay off her daughter’s student loans, then “tithe heavily” to the church. They have plans to donate to the children’s hospital and help friends, too. Their daughter would really like a pony, too. You and me both, girl!
They’re taking the lump sum
Lottery winners have two options for claiming their prize money: they can get it all in a lump sum, right then and there. Or, they can receive 30 annual payments. Lisa and John aren’t messing around; they took that lump sum! While they receive less money that way ( $983.5 million at once vs $533 million at the end of the installments), John said they were taking the cash because you’re “not guaranteed tomorrow.”
They almost didn’t enter the lottery
Lisa urged John to pick up a Powerball ticket on his way home from work — just hours before the drawing. John didn’t want to, but she persisted. And that definitely paid off! At a press conference on January 15 after being officially announced the lotto winner, Lisa said: “We just wanted a little piece of the pie. Instead we got a big piece!”
They’re not changing their lives…at all
No huge mansion, no decked-out cars, nothing. They’re even keeping their jobs. The Robinsons are happy to keep living in their small house in Munford, and both want to continue working.
