This is so heartbreaking. A producer for ABC7 Chicago, Anne Swaney, 39, was killed on a tourism trip to Belize on Jan. 14. She disappeared after a morning yoga session and found hours later floating face down in the Mopan River. There are still no suspects in the murder. Here’s what we know about the tragic event, so far.
A fun, adventurous vacation turned tragic for Anne when she was brutally killed and possibly even sexually assaulted in Belize. The ABC7 Chicago producer was forced to stay behind on a horseback riding trip when there weren’t enough horses, and opted to do yoga instead. However, when some locals found her belongings on a deck with her nowhere in sight, they reported her missing to the owned of the Nabatunich Resort in Benque Viejo in Belize, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Police dogs were set on the trail, but didn’t find her body until Jan. 15 in the morning. Benque Viejo Police Superintendent Daniel Arzu said Anne was found floating face down, wearing nothing but a bra. “We suspect that she may have been sexually violated,” Arzu said. “She had bruises around her neck that reveals that there might have been some strangulation or some sort of fight back.” So far there is no suspect, and an autopsy is underway.
Anne was the executive producer of online operations at ABC7 Chicago, and her coworkers are completely heartbroken over the loss of their friend. “She was a trailblazer in the digital news space and was one of our first website employees,” said John H. Idler, president of ABC7. “Anne helped us evolve our business and our newsroom, but most importantly, she was a kind person who was always had a smile and a positive attitude.” Our prayers go out to Anne’s friends and family in the wake of this tragic event.
