It didn’t take long for things to get ugly between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz at the Jan. 14 Republican debate. Donald went after Ted over the issue of the senator’s citizenship, but the audience turned on Donald and booed the former ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ star!
That sound that Donald Trump, 69, is not used to hearing? Those are voters booing the presidential candidate. During the first Republican debate of 2016, Donald once again attacked Ted Cruz, 44, over the issue of his citizenship. Not only did Ted fight back, but the audience actually sided with him instead of Donald!
At the Jan. 14 event, moderator Neil Cavuto brought up Donald’s concerns that Ted wasn’t legally eligible to run for president and the Texas senator sarcastically said that “I’m glad we’re focusing on the important topics of the evening.” Ted mentioned how Donald’s own lawyers determined that Ted — who was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father — was able to run for president. “Since [then], the Constitution hasn’t changed,” Ted said, “but the poll numbers have.”
Oooh – burn! Ted wasn’t done, as he brought up how foreign-born American citizens like Sen. John McCain and George Romney were able to run for president. He even pointed out how Donald’s mother was born in Scotland and became a naturalized citizen. Ted said if Donald’s birther arguments were to win out, the real-estate mogul would be disqualified from running, too!
Things went from bad to worse for Donald. When he defended himself from Ted’s attack by saying he was actually ahead in a Wall Street Journal and NBC poll, the audience started to boo him! The Donald tried to play it off, saying he was “concerned” that if he were to win the nomination and pick Ted as his running mate, the Democrats will “sue and [make sure] we can’t take him along for the ride. I don’t like that.” So Donald’s afraid that the Democrats will accuse Ted of being ineligible? The audience wasn’t buying it, and they started to boo Donald again!

It was actually John McCain who said that “it’s worth looking into” whether Ted can run for president or not. But Donald was quick to start trashing Ted. “You can’t have a person who’s running for office, even though Ted is very glib and he goes out and says ‘Well, I’m a natural-born citizen,’ but the point is you’re not,” the Donald said at campaign event on Jan. 09, according the New York Times.
If this all sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the same thing Donald said about President Barack Obama. Donald famously hounded Barack about releasing his birth certificate, his passport application and his college records to prove that the 44th president was an actual American citizen. Donald even released his own birth certificate after Bill Maher made a $5 million dollar dare.
What do you think about Donald going after Ted’s Canadian birth, HollyowodLifers?
