The Republican party is incredibly divided heading into the 2016 primary — and Nikki Haley proved that by slamming fellow GOP party member during her State of the Union response speech on Jan. 12. Find out how she subtly dissed the presidential hopeful after Obama’s address right here.
Nikki Haley and Donald Trump, 69, may be members of the same political party, but that doesn’t mean they see eye to eye. In fact, Nikki threw some major shade at the Republican favorite while responding to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Jan. 12, urging the people to ‘resist the temptation’ to follow his ‘angry’ voice.
“Today, we live in a time of threats like few others in recent memory,” Haley said in her speech. “During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices. We must resist that temptation.” The 43-year-old never named Trump specifically, but her follow-up statement made it clear that she was referencing the Apprentice host for his controversial views on immigrants.
“No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country,” she added. “I have no doubt that if we act with proper focus, we can protect our borders, our sovereignty and our citizens, all while remaining true to America’s noblest legacies.” READ THE FULL TRANSCRIPT OF NIKKI’S SPEECH HERE.
When asked about her comments on the Today show the following morning, Nikki confirmed that Trump is “one of” the people she was referring to, but revealed, “There’s other people in the media, there’s people in my state, I think we’re seeing it across the country.” This whole thing is especially interesting because a State of the Union responder has never used the speech as an opportunity to bash their own party — Trump has made this a one-of-a-kind election year, that’s for sure.
Of course, she also criticized President Obama, saying that his “record has often fallen short of his soaring words,” and citing “a crushing national debt, a health care plan that has made insurance less affordable and doctors less available, and chaotic unrest in many of our cities,” as her proof. And even though she’s clearly not supportive of Trump, she obviously wants to see a Republican president take Obama’s place. “We would end a disastrous health care program and replace it with reforms that lowered costs and actually let you keep your doctor,” she explained. “We would made international agreements that were celebrated in Israel and protested in Iran, not the other way around.”
In his address, President Obama made it clear that his main priority in his final year is to stop global terrorism with the incredible United States military. He also made it his — and VP Joe Biden’s — mission to lead a national effort in finding a cure for cancer, and pressed the importance of recognizing the impact of climate change and providing more affordable college and education in America.
