Live musicals on TV are all the buzz these days, so why not take on another! That’s NBC’s plan — ‘Hairspray’ is up next.
Good morning Baltimore! NBC has just announced that they are currently working on the next live musical event: Hairspray. While “the deals aren’t closed yet,” the network is in the final stages of doing so. Let the casting hopes begin!
“We’ll be bringing you Hairspray next December. The deals aren’t closed yet,” NBC chairman Robert Greenblatt revealed at the 2016 Winter TCA Press Tour on Jan. 13 in Pasadena, Cali. “That’s all we have so far. They know what they’re doing and we’re really excited. That title seems really fun and I think it will be really great live.”
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will be executive producers, as they were on The Sound of Music Live, Peter Pan Live and The Wiz Live. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are set to compose.
Hairspray was created as a movie in 1988, before hitting the Broadway stage in 2002. Five years later, we fell in love with the movie adaptation in 2007 starring John Travolta, Zac Efron and Amanda Bynes.
