Get your numbers ready, it’s Powerball time again! After 19 drawings with no jackpot winner, the lottery has reached a whopping $1.5 billion total. Experts are saying that Jan. 13 could be the night that someone (or several people) finally claims the record-setting jackpot, and it may be you if you play your cards…ahem, numbers…right! What should you know ahead of the historic drawing? We’ve got you covered!
1. This is the biggest jackpot in history.
After no one had the winning numbers for the Jan. 9 drawing, the jackpot total jumped to over $1 billion, shattering lottery records for the highest jackpot ever. The previous amount, $900 million, had already crushed records, as the biggest jackpot won before then was in 2013 when an 84-year-old man won $590.5 million.
2. The odds of winning are far more than 1 in 1,000,000.
If you take part in Powerball to just be able to say you won something, your odds aren’t so bad: 1 in 24, as matching one number gets you $4. But when it comes to the jackpot, the odds are 1 in 292,201,338.00. So you’re saying there’s a chance!
3. Some numbers are luckier than others — and it’s not a secret!
According to the website LottoNumbers.com, the five most commonly drawn numbers are 26, 41, 16, 22, and 42. As for Powerball numbers, the five most commonly drawn are 20, 6, 29, 2, and 18. If you still feel like you have no idea how to choose your numbers, there’s even a guide to selecting wisely!
4. If you live in California, your chances may be better than most.
Of the 18,315,365 people who won a prize of some sort from the Jan. 9 drawing, 2,267,503 of them were Californians. Sure, it’s a huge state…but hey, anything to increase your odds, right?
5. It’s not too late to buy a ticket, but time — and number combos — is running out.
Although the official deadline to buy Powerball tickets is 9:45 p.m. EST, some stores will vary state to state. Plus, 85.8% of number combinations have already been sold for this billion-dollar drawing. Don’t miss out on your chance to roll in the dough!
