We certainly didn’t see THAT coming. Our jaws are still on the floor after watching the Jan. 12 season premiere of ‘Pretty Little Liars.’ Seriously — not only did fans get hit with suspenseful moment after suspenseful moment, but the episode culminated with a shocking death that we never could have predicted.
Well, the cast of Pretty Little Liars was right when they said the new “A” was “deadlier” than the last. That was proven on the Jan. 12 season premiere, when a person we’ve known for the entire series was found dead. Talk about kicking the season off with a bang.
Sadly, Charlotte (Vanessa Ray) was found dead in the front lawn of the church in Rosewood. And while it was initially thought to be a suicide, police later discovered that she was dead before her body was even thrown from the bell tower. And unfortunately for Hanna (Ashley Benson), Aria (Lucy Hale), Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) — who only came to town to help Alison (Sasha Pieterse) release Charlotte from the hospital — they’re the prime suspects.
Alison actually wrote the girls letters in an effort to get them to come home and help her free Charlotte. In order to do so, they had to sit in front of a judge and admit they’re no longer scared of the person they used to call “A.” While hesitant at first, everyone agreed to go along with Alison. However, when the time actually came, Aria was the one who said exactly how we felt — Charlotte can NEVER get out. Sadly, Aria’s fear wasn’t enough to keep Charlotte locked up, as the judge sent her home. Alison, of course, was instantaneously happy, but that didn’t last very long because the next morning, Charlotte went missing. That is, until police — including Toby (Keegan Allen) — found her dead body.
So who killed her? We have no clue, but it could have been anyone. There’s the heartbroken Ezra (Ian Harding), who is already angry because his wife may or may not have been killed overseas. Plus, he has a motive — to protect Aria (he witnessed her plea with the judge not to release Charlotte out of fear for her own life). There’s also Sara Harvey, who made a dramatic return at Charlotte’s funeral. What was she doing there? Your guess is as good as ours, but she looked hella pissed and like she was on a path for vengeance. Mona also seems sketchy, but when does she not? And, of course, Jason is mysteriously missing. Alison told the girls that he didn’t want Charlotte released, so perhaps he felt the need to end her life once she got out? Whoever did kill Charlotte, will likely be revealed as the season progresses. And it’s possible this person is the new “A” we’ve been warned to be nervous about. Either way, we’re already hooked to the new season and can’t wait to see what happens next.
And if we had our way, that would totally include more scenes between Spencer and Caleb (Tyler Blackburn)! They’re totally hooking up, right?! That’s honestly a pairing we never thought we’d want, but one we’d gladly welcome with open arms now that we’ve gotten a taste of it. Seriously — did you not feel the tension between them during their brief moments on-screen together? Caleb kept talking to Hanna about Spencer as if they were in regular contact with each other. And then there was the look and smile Caleb and Spencer gave each other after he left Hanna’s hotel room. We. Want. More.
Other fun tidbits: Hanna is engaged, Toby is building a house, Emily’s dad died sometime in the last five years, Aria is dating someone who’s not Ezra (boo!), Spencer’s mom is running for State Senate, and Radley is now some sort of upscale restaurant, where you can grab brunch. Oh, and Hanna’s mom is responsible for it. (We thought she was still a bank teller?…)
