Oh man, Ricky Gervais really went for it in his Golden Globes opening monologue! The comedian took a major dig at Caitlyn Jenner while kicking off the show, and totally dissed her for being involved in a fatal car crash last year. Was it super insensitive…or just plain hilarious?
Caitlyn Jenner, 66, was the brunt of Ricky Gervais’ jokes during the 2016 Golden Globes opening monologue. The show host just couldn’t hold back from commenting about the former Olympian’s transition from man to woman, and shockingly referenced the deadly car accident she was involved in while still living as Bruce Jenner. Yikes!
“I’ve changed a lot this year, but not as much as Bruce Jenner,” Ricky began the segment. Caitlyn has been a topic in most award show monologues this year, so the reference was no surprise, but the 54-year-old really took things to a new, controversial level. He discussed how Caitlyn has had such a great year, showing such great bravery and doing so much for women….”but not a lot for women drivers.”
Ricky is, of course, referencing the car accident that Caitlyn — still Bruce at the time — was involved in on Feb. 7, 2015, during which she hit a woman’s car from behind, sending her into oncoming traffic, and leading to her death. The whole incident was beyond devastating and totally tragic, so it was a big risk for Ricky to reference it in a comedic way. When the camera panned to some audience members, they definitely seemed VERY unimpressed. Eek!
After his segment on Caitlyn, Ricky went on to diss Jeffrey Tambor for playing a trans woman in Transparent, and he took things to a whole new level. “Where does Jeffrey Trambor hide his balls while playing a trans woman?” he asked. Oh man — Jeffrey was NOT impressed, understandably.
In his monologue, Ricky also took shots at Sean Penn, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler...and many more. Oh, and of course, he had a beer at the ready right on the podium, as if we would expect anything less! Stay tuned, because there’s likely to be a LOT more of this to come…
HollywoodLifers, what did you think of Ricky’s remarks about Caitlyn? Insensitive…or definitely hilarious?
