After Denzel Washington brought his family on stage with him to accept the Cecil B. DeMille award at the Golden Globes on Jan. 10, the ‘Training Day’ actor was literally speechless! An emotional Denzel needed help from his wife and kids to properly thank everyone for the prestigious honor!
Denzel Washington, 61, wasn’t alone when he accepted the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime award at the Golden Globes, as he had his wife, Paulette Washington, 65, and their children by his side to accept the honor. Thank goodness they were there, because Denzel needed their help to remember who to thank and what to say!
Denzel received the honor among his fellow actors, actresses and Hollywood legends during the Jan. 10 event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Tom Hanks, 59, the award’s presenter (who worked with Denzel in Philadelphia) introduced his friend by calling him a generation-defining artist, an “immortal of the silver screen,” before comparing him to legends like Humphrey Bogart, Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando.
Denzel was clearly moved after such an introduction, because he said he “lost [his] speech” and forgot his reading glasses after he got on stage. Thankfully, Paulette was there to help him thank all the important people. It’s not everyday that Denzel is left stunned, but the love and appreciation from all those in the room almost had Denzel in tears!
Denzel can add this award to his growing trophy case. Denzel has been nominated for seven Golden Globes, according to E! News, winning two for Glory and The Hurricane. He also has two Oscars — for Glory and Training Day — and two Emmy nominations. He has a Tony Award, a BAFTA, a NAACP Image award and even a Grammy!
“Washington’s long and storied career is earmarked by his countless roles in front and behind the camera,” Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, said when he announced Denzel as the award’s winner, according to Variety. “It is the HFPA’s privilege to honor his contributions to the entertainment industry.” You can watch Denzel’s movies and see why he’s earned this lifetime achievement award by joining Amazon Prime for free — where you can get thousands of movies and shows anytime, anywhere.
Denzel now joins an elite group of winners that includes everyone from Gregory Peck to Barbra Streisand to Elizabeth Taylor to last year’s winner, George Clooney. During his acceptance speech, George was more excited about his new wife, Amal Clooney. “It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love,” he said, before looking to Amal. “I couldn’t be more proud to be your husband.”
