Looks like UFC fans will have to wait a little longer to see Holly Holm take on Ronda Rousey again. The long-awaited rematch was postponed on Jan. 6 as it was announced that Holly will take on another UFC fighter during her next fight. Find out who it is here!
Since Holly Holm, 34, knocked out Ronda Rousey, 28, during their buzzed-about UFC title match in November 2015, fans have been at the edge of their seats waiting for what would no doubt be one of the biggest MMA rematches in years. Unfortunately, it now looks like fans will be forced to wait a little longer, as it was announced that Holly will have to defend her women’s bantamweight title against a different fighter before going head-to-head against Ronda again. Who’s the lucky competitor? Get the details below!
Though she was originally thought to be taking on Ronda in her next fight, ESPN is now reporting that Holly will actually face her first title defense against Miesha Tate during a UFC 197 pay-per-view event in Las Vegas on March 5. The women will reportedly be a part of larger event that will also feature a fight between crowned featherweight champion Conor McGregor and lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos for the 155-pound championship.
That’s great and all, but what does this mean for Holly and Ronda’s rematch? UFC president Dana White seemed adamant that the rematch would be the main event for UFC 200 in July, but that appears to no longer be the case. “All gonna depend on timing. We have no answers right now on any of this,” Dana told Yahoo Sports in a text message.
In the meantime, Ronda is currently enjoying scheduled break, which includes shooting the Road House remake, posing nude for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and hosting Saturday Night Live Jan. 23. While that may not seem like the best way to prepare for a huge rematch, Dana has assured fans that Ronda is not going all Hollywood on us just yet. “You will see Ronda Rousey fight again,” she said on UFC Tonight after making the announcement. “Ronda has dedicated the last three-plus years to working hard here. Not just fighting, but promoting and taking the sport and the UFC to a whole other level. Ronda has some well-deserved time off, but she will fight this year.” Just not soon enough it seems.
