Celebrity hairstylist (who has worked with Jennifer for years) Juan Carlos Maciques is the stylist on the show. He’s breaking down how he creates the look for J-Lo:

Prep damp hair with a curling lotion or spray. “If you have coarse or curly hair opt for a hydrating curl enhancing cream to keep frizz at bay. For fine hair, use a lotion or spray to accentuate the curls without weighing hair down.”

Juan told us: “We want to add texture to hair to properly hold and separate the curls. If real life is anything like a set, endurance is key given the unpredictability of the elements and the long hours so an added dose of both could be in order throughout the day. This look is all about enhancing your natural texture, not recreating it — work with what you have!”

Use a diffuser to rough dry hair. “Pre-dry hair with a diffuser to allow the natural texture to come through. Let the diffuser do the work. And hands off your hair! The more you touch, the frizzier it becomes. If you have the time, feel free to air dry hair — less work for you later on!”

Holding the ends of your hair, wrap small sections around a 1/2” curling iron to enhance natural curls. Jennifer has a pretty short bob, so use a thermal glove to avoid burning yourself on the curling iron.

“Go through hair and sporadically add in curls alternating the direction towards your face and away from your face. This will keep the look tousled and carefree. Hold the hair on the iron for seconds to avoid a set look. The idea is to follow the natural wave of the hair so focus on what the hair is doing naturally. The ends shouldn’t be too curled so don’t clamp the iron on the ends. Wrap and release.”
