So, you couldn’t stay awake for the premiere of ‘The Shannara Chronicles’ on MTV and now you’re wondering: with so many good shows on TV, is this one worth it? Well, the short answer is yes, yes it is.
I’ll be honest you with — I’m not into fantasy TV shows and films. Game of Thrones is a great story, but I can’t get hooked. Lord of the Rings, eh. However, I found myself completely mesmerized by MTV’s new series, The Shannara Chronicles, which premiered on Jan. 5. Trust me, this is show is perfect guilty pleasure material.

Let me tell you, I’m not even sure what a hobbit is and I still loved this premiere. The show’s premise takes place on Earth, not middle Earth, in the far far future and features trolls, elves, and humans. And it’s the humans that win your heart right away (oh yeah, they’re also all beautiful which never hurts).
Austin Butler plays Wil, a half-human, half-elf decedent of royalty; Poppy Drayton plays a princess who can actually speak to the tree that is now evil, the Ellcrys; Ivana Baquero plays Eretria, a strong and sensitive member of the rovers; and Manu Bennett plays Allanon, a druid who is a few hundreds years old and is one of the only who can summon magic still (I have a feeling that may change).
Does it sound a little confusing? Sure. But when you watch it, you’ll be engrossed by the backstories of the characters, the beautiful sets and sceneries that Jon Favreau and author Terry Brooks created, and well the dilemma that is saving the world.
The hesitation was there for me, too — the trailer actually makes the show look a little more confusing than it actually is. The show will not only mesmerize the fantasy fans, but there’s something there for everyone: a love triangle introduced early (it is MTV, duh!), some pretty comedic lines, and yes, action and cliffhangers that will keep you coming back.
Are you convinced?
