‘NCIS’ is losing one of its original characters. After 13 years, Michael Weatherly will be leaving the CBS drama at the end of this season — read the touching goodbye message he wrote on Twitter right here.
Say it ain’t so! Michael Weatherly will not be returning to NCIS next fall, as it was confirmed on Jan. 5 that Season 13 will be his last on the show. The actor, who portrays Special Agent Tony DiNozzo on the hit series, took to Twitter to reveal that the rumors he’d be leaving are true. So sad!
“DiNozzo is a wonderful, quixotic character and I couldn’t have had more fun playing him over the past 13 seasons,” he wrote. “I will miss the amazing crew & cast, who are like family to me, & to the fans all over the world – THANK YOU, it’s been a fantastic ride!” The 47-year-old did not include a reason for his departure…but 13 years is a long time!
“He is a valued part of the CBS family, and the immense charm and talent he brings to the screen as ‘Very’ Special Agent Tony DiNozzo has helped make NCIS what it is today — the No. 1 drama in the world,” CBS said in a statement. “We thank Michael for all of his contributions to this successful franchise and look forward to continuing to develop projects with him as part of our ongoing development deal.”
Michael first portrayed Agent DiNozzo on the show JAG before getting cast as one of the stars in its spinoff, NCIS. He has also appeared on NCIS: New Orleans and NCIS: Los Angeles, making him only one of two actors to show up on all four series’ in the CBS franchise.
Interestingly, this news comes just one month after Michael was charged with two counts of DUI when he was allegedly being caught speeding in Los Angeles. He spent 15 hours in jail after the arrest, and could face a maximum of six months in jail with up to $1,000 in fines. Yikes!
