For Ellen DeGeneres, helping out people no laughing matter. Yet, the comedian and talk show host was all smiles when she accepted the Favorite Humanitarian award at the People’s Choice Awards on Jan. 6. She also left the audience grinning, thanks to a shirtless Chris Hemsworth! Click to watch.
As much as Ellen DeGeneres, 57, likes to make people laugh, she loves helping those in need so much more. During the 42nd People’s Choice Awards, Ellen’s fans and fellow celebrities thanked her for the countless years of charitable work by giving Ellen the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Humanitarian! Ellen returned the love with some help from a certain, half-naked Thor star.
“It’s a little strange to get an award for being nice and generous and kind, which is what we’re all supposed to do to one another,” Ellen said after she received the honor from presenter and fellow comedian, Melissa McCarthy. Everyone attending the Jan. 6 event felt that way too, giving Ellen a round of applause. Ellen accepted the award in her own signature way, with plenty of jokes and sorta humility. But, Ellen is a comedian and a generous one. She couldn’t end unless it was a joke.
“You know, here’s the thing, awards are great. But what really makes me happy is making other people happy,” said Ellen. “And tonight, I’d want to make you happy, so to share with you — I’ve brought a shirtless photo of Chris Hemsworth to share.” And there he was, a buff, glistening Australian hunk. Thank you, Ellen!

Ellen was named this year’s award winner for her work in helping communities in need and raising awareness of helpful organizations. She has worked tirelessly with Feeding America, the American Red Cross and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, according to LookToTheStars.org. Ellen will even use this award to help out some needy children, as she will donate the $200,000 to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Ellen’s selfless work received a lot of kudos, especially from her close friend, Justin Bieber. Shortly after the win, he tweeted his congratulations to her!

Ellen now joins a group of celebs that have worked hard to help out others less fortunate than them. When Ben Affleck accepted the award in 2015, he said “The one way to combat the terrible things we see is to bring a little bit of kindness into the world.” When Sandra Bullock took home the honor, she made sure to thank the important people in her life — including Louis Bullock, the baby boy she adopted in 2010. “My little make …makes me try harder every day,” she said through her tears.
That wasn’t the only award Ellen is taking home. She also won for Favorite Daytime TV Host. She’s competed against Dr. Oz, Steve Harvey, Rachael Ray and Wendy Williams. Considering the grief Steve got from screwing up the Miss Universe pageant, maybe Ellen might give him the award. He kind of needs the ego boost and she’s generous like that!
