Throwback alert! Ariana Grande reminded the world of her raw, sweet talent on Jan. 4 when she returned to her roots for a surprise performance of epic proportions. This moving performance may just be her finest yet — watch every brilliant moment here!
Ariana Grande, 22, experienced a blast from the past on Jan. 4 when she found herself in front of an intimate crowd paying homage to the Broadway show that helped launch her to international stardom. Ariana’s modest, raw performance was a happy reminder of why she is and always will be a star — that voice of hers is just too darn beautiful to ignore!
Ariana may be a pop sensation now, but every star has to get her start somewhere. For Ariana, her path to fame began with Broadway. In case you forgot, Ariana made her Broadway debut way back when in 2008 as a curly-haired 14-year-old in the show 13.
After getting nostalgic on Twitter during 13‘s seventh anniversary in October 2015, it’s no surprise that when Jason Robert Brown, who wrote the music and lyrics for 13, gave the singer a chance to “Come sing a tune or two,” at his Los Angeles concert, Ariana enthusiastically accepted his offer — in fact, she ended up singing THREE tunes!
hard to believe it's already been 7 years since '13' opened on Bway but it has! so thankful for the friendships, the experience & the music.

Although we’re used to seeing Ariana dressed to the nines in sparkles and futuristic frocks, for this appearance she toned it down a notch…or three. Dressed in an oversized sweatshirt and glasses, Ariana stepped onto stage before an excited audience at Catalina Bar and Grill in Hollywood where she performed a three song-set: “The Lamest Place In the World” and “Brand New You” from 13, as well as “Getting Out” from Jason’s album Wearing Someone Else’s Clothes. We feel the nostalgia already!
Nothing’s more encouraging than seeing a superstar like Ariana remaining humble. We love that she remembers the people who helped her get to where she is today — you go, Ari!
Tell us what you think, HollywoodLifers! Is Ariana’s talent showcased best when singing no-frills Broadway tunes? Or should she stick to pop?
