‘Telenovela’ finally premiered on NBC January 4, and it’s giving us a juicy glimpse into the life of a bonafide soap superstar: Eva Longoria! Sure, life on top is great — until an appearance from your ex-husband breaks your character. Read on for our series premiere recap!
Eva Longoria plays Ana Sofia Calderon, the biggest telenovela star in the world, who is used to getting the star treatment, When her producer announces that they’ve hired a hunky new actor to star opposite to her, she’s dreaming of Enrique Iglesias. Sorry Ana Sofia — it’s your ex-husband, Xavier! The drama is going to be good.
In the first episode of Telenovela, which premiered on NBC January 4, we’re introduced to Ana Sofia, an incredibly famous actress who has the adoration of the genre’s entire audience. Her show is the stereotypical telenovela: campy, glamorous and full of gratuitous sex scenes. Incredible, right? But her throne starts crumbling when the network hires her ex-husband and former co-star, Xavier Castillo (totally handsome Jencarlos Canela) to play her love interest once again.
Obviously, that’s not going to fly for her, and she tries her best to stop their decision. Not working! Why should the man who cheated on her with Shakira (yep!) encroach on her territory? Things keep getting worse for Ana Sofia; she’s used to being the hot one, and gets cast as some young hottie’s mother. Yikes. CLICK HERE to buy the pilot episode!
For the rest of the episode, crazy hijinks ensue. Ana Sofia keeps escalating her insane behavior because she’s hurt, and doesn’t want her star power to dim because of her horrible ex. Sure, there’s definitely chemistry between them still (they’re both smoking hot, so obviously), but it might not be enough to make this working — and personal — relationship work.
Overall, Telenovela still needs some time to develop. There are funny moments, but it winds up coming off a little slapstick. Breaking into Xavier’s boat with a crowbar while wearing stilettos comes to mind. The best parts come when they play up the camp of a telenovela itself — making a slap elicit shocked faces from everyone in the show-within-the-show’s cast, and the people on the crew itself.
