Ever since Netflix’s captivating new true-crime series premiered on Dec. 18, fans have been debating online whether or not Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey are innocent in the death of Teresa Halbach. Several theories, which you can read here, implicate others.
Was Steven Avery framed for the murder of Teresa Halbach? That’s what many fans on Reddit are wondering after watching Netflix’s addictive new true-crime series, Making A Murderer. Some fans were so captivated by the documentary that they’ve come up with theories as to why Steven’s innocent. See them here!
Below, you’ll find the most popular Making A Murderer theories, which implicate others.
1. Bobby Dassey and Scott Tadych Killed Teresa Halbach
This is one of the more popular theories, as Bobby Dassey (Steven Avery’s nephew and Brendan Dassey’s brother) and Scott Tadych (Steven’s brother-in-law) provided alibis for each other, and they don’t seem to like Steven very much. Furthermore, Scott claims Teresa was gone by the time he left Steven’s property at 3 p.m. the day of the murder, but a testimony by a school bus driver claims Teresa was on the property around 3:30 p.m. that day. Bobby also had fresh scratches on his back when questioned and examined by police, according to The Wrap, but he said the scratches came from a puppy.
Reddit user dem_eggs felt Bobby’s alibi wasn’t credible, as “his only alibi was his step-dad, who’s own testimony changed regarding the timeline. The step-dad’s alibi was… Bobby Dassey.” And in terms of the difference between timelines, this user felt the bus driver had “much better reason to keep track of the time on her routes,” so her testimony seemed more credible.
2. The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office Framed Steven Avery
This might be the most popular theory of all, as the defense tried arguing that Sgt. Andrew Colborn and Lt. James Lenk were too involved in Steven Avery’s case. In fact, it was Lt. James Lenk who found Teresa’s keys in Steven’s bedroom, despite them not being there in previous searches. Furthermore, Sgt. Andrew Colborn knew details about Teresa’s car — the license plate, make and model — before she went missing. And don’t even get us started on the blood vial with the hole in the lid. Because of this, fans have gone as far as suggesting Colborn and Lenk were involved in the murder.
3. Teresa Halbach’s Ex-Boyfriend Or Brother Killed Her
This is the theory we had while watching the Netflix series. Ryan Hillegas, who was identified as Teresa’s ex-boyfriend, testified during the trial and said he just happened to have “guessed” her cell phone password in order to try and find her. Her brother, Mike, somehow also knew the password as well. Furthermore, during the trial, evidence showed that someone erased voicemails off of Teresa’s phone after she disappeared. And can we talk about how press happy Mike was during the trial? That definitely seemed odd to us. Perhaps he was trying to direct the narrative.
During the trial, Steven’s lawyer said Ryan should have been treated as a suspect. He said, “In most cases, the people who are close to a victim are the ones who are in fact the killers. And, in this case, in every single instance, all those people who are close to her, the police never investigated any of them. They never from the minute the case was reported considered — seriously considered — the possibility that Teresa Halbach was killed by somebody she knew.”
Reddit user jaredwa agreed that Ryan should have been a suspect, claiming that since “[Ryan] had [Teresa’s] password to get into her Cingular account … it’s very possible that he had it to get into her voicemail. So, he likely knew where she was and when … [and] he could have removed any incriminating messages.”
