Dr. Robert Dorin, a New York City Board-Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Hair Restoration, warns about the negative affects of too much alcohol:
“Alcohol can negatively affect hair in multiple ways. For instance, excessive consumption of alcohol raises levels of estrogen which results in hair thinning. Zinc is essential for maintaining healthy hair, and it is known that excessive consumption of alcohol lowers zinc levels in the body. Alcohol consumption can also affect folic acid levels, which affects how strong your hair strands are. This means that the possibility of breakage and shedding hair rises.
Our hair requires constant nourishment, and healthy hair relies on how hydrated our bodies are. Consuming excessive alcohol can leave hair dry and brittle, and even worse as mentioned above, hair thinning and loss.”
Dr. Dorin continues: “The best way to protect against this is to cut back on drinking, especially when you know that you may be drinking more than usual (for example during the holiday season). It is also important to eat a balanced diet consisting of proper nutrients, vitamins, and protein, and to also drink PLENTY of water. Hydration is key to healthy, shiny, hair.”
