As some people celebrate the start of days getting longer, others — like Frozen‘s Olaf — are already longing for summertime. Keep reading to get the scoop on the winter solstice and see how long it is until summer begins!
After experiencing the shortest day of the year with roughly less than 10 hours of sunlight, people around the Northern Hemisphere can begin to look forward to the days becoming brighter as well as each day taking us one step closer to the warmer seasons. It may feel like summer in some places recently (the forecast shows 71 degrees for Christmas Eve in New York!), but how many days must pass before bikini season becomes official? 180, to be exact! The summer solstice will take place Monday, June 20, 2016 at 22:34 UTC, according to iWeatherNet.com. If the weather stays as warm as it has been, those days will fly by!
Oddly enough, this year’s first day of winter actually occurred on two different days across the Northern Hemisphere, as the solstice took place at 4:49 a.m. Universal Time on Dec. 22. Because Pacific Standard Time is eight hours behind Universal Time, this meant that winter officially began at 8:49 p.m. for the West Coast and 11:49 p.m. for the East Coast. Either way, the winter solstice took place exactly when it is supposed to, as it most commonly falls on Dec. 21 and the second most common date is Dec. 22.
Whether you’re ready for some snow or you just put a 180-day summer countdown into your smartphone, there’s something to for everyone to celebrate upon winter solstice’s arrival. Are you going to be like Olaf this year, or maybe more of an Elsa? Whatever you’re feeling, longer days will make it easier to “Let It Go”!
