The NBA is taking a stand against gun violence. Stephen Curry, Carmelo Anthony and more basketball stars have filmed Christmas Day commercials to bring awareness to this terrible issue, and you can watch their powerful messages here.
Those watching the NBA games on Christmas will get hit with a hard, but necessary, dose of reality this year. Stephen Curry, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul have all filmed ads taking a stand against gun violence, and they’ll begin airing during the holiday games on ESPN and ABC. Get your first look right now.The group PSA begins with Steph telling the story about how he heard about a three-year-old girl getting shot, and pointing out that he has a three-year-old daughter, Riley, of his own. Obviously, he couldn’t even imagine what it would be like to go through something like that.
The video cuts to other NBA stars, along with shooting survivors and their relatives, sharing their own stories about how gun violence has affected their lives. It’s only a 30 second clip, but it does a perfect job at getting the point across, closing with the scary statistic that 88 people in the United States die EVERY DAY because of gun violence. It’s a truly sickening fact that really grabs at the viewers attention in the right way.
Individual clips from Steph, Carmelo and Chris were also all released, and in his, the Golden State Warriors star explains why he has decided to join this powerful PSA campaign, and he once again brings in his family man lifestyle to explain why this issue has affected him so deeply.
“I’m doing this PSA because I think it can be changed,” he explains. “It’s heartbreaking, it’s disappointing. I know for each of those families to have to go through that is unimaginable pain. It’s affecting the cultural tone and temperature of the country. Right in my backyard, right where I work, where the arena is, right where we play, the countless people that are affected. They can’t just go down teh street to the corner store, they can’t just go to the park with their family out of fear for their lives and that’s sad. As a aprent of two little girls, anytime you hear of somebody not even involved in an altercation or dispute, getting caught in the middle of a stray bullet or something, that hurts. I don’t know what I would do if I got a call that my daughter’s gone. No parent should have to go through that. Whatever we can do to hopefully change the culture, that’s what were’ here for. I have a voice, I want to here it. That’s what we’re here for — to stop gun violence in its entirety.”
Steph’s team, the Golden State Warriors, will take on the Cleveland Cavaliers in a rematch of the 2015 NBA Finals. In that series, which took place in June, the Warriors came out victorious 4-2, and they’re already having a tremendous season, with an epic 26-1 start so far. Looks like we’ll have to wait and see who wins this big re-match! Get your very own Stephen Curry jersey RIGHT HERE.
