Steve Harvey is in full-on damage control mode after announcing the wrong winner at Miss Universe on Dec. 20. After his initial apology, the show host took to Facebook to say sorry yet again — read his post to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines right here.
Chances are, Steve Harvey is going to be apologizing for this one for a long time to come! The Miss Universe host accidentally announced that Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, had won the 2015 pageant, when it was really Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, who should’ve been crowned winner. Check out his new Facebook apology here.
“I made a terrible mistake in announcing the wrong winner and runner-up for the Miss Universe pageant,” he wrote. “I know how much pride many countries, fans and most importantly, the contestants take in preparing for this night. I hope that you can forgive me. All contestants were amazing but I want to specifically apologize to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines again and whole heartedly. You both represented well for your countries, families and yourselves.”
It was an incredibly awkward moment, as Ariadna had accepted the crown and Miss Universe sash from last year’s winner, Paulina Vega, when Steve revealed that he had made a terrible error: It was actually Pia who was supposed to be the winner. Paulina had to take the crown off Ariadna’s head in front of everyone, as Steve intensely apologized for the mistake.
Cameras caught the Family Feud host backstage with Pia after the show, clearly continuing to say how sorry he was for what went down. “It’s a very non-traditional crowning moment,” the winner said afterward, keeping her emotions in check and statement super neutral. “Very 2015!”
As for Ariadna, she remained incredibly gracious afterward, telling reporters, “Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy,” as she wiped tears away from her face. “Thank you for voting for me.” It was so great to see her stay so classy despite the understandably devastating situation on live television, and she’ll always be remembered for handling this with such grace.
