So, were the winners written on the card in Greek? Did a nefarious producer say the wrong name in his ear piece? Was Steve sent as a spy by an alien nation meant to destroy Earth’s beauty pageants?! Nope, he’s blaming his “mortifying” snafu on an “honest mistake.” Steve accepted 100% of responsibility for the flub. Turns out he just read the darn card wrong.
His return to the stage may have felt brutal and awkward, but Steve didn’t know how else to handle it once he realized what he did. “All that I could do was, when I got back and I started reading the card, was just turn back around and try to fix it,” he said. We must say, it couldn’t have been easy to admit that he made such a tragic error, and while he could have just run off and left a producer to come out and correct it, he did do the right thing. “I mean the dishonorable thing would be to just leave it like it was. It didn’t deserve to happen that way, but it happened from an honest mistake.”
