I haven’t agreed with one thing Donald Trump has said during his presidential campaign, but we are on the same page when it comes to his suggestion that Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia both be named co-Miss Universes. That is the right thing to do!
After Miss Universe host Steve Harvey made the epic mistake of announcing the wrong pageant winner, it’s time to make history and announce Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia as co-winners. Donald Trump suggested it this morning and voiced what lots of us were already thinking. What could be the harm in recognizing both of these extraordinary women as Miss Universes?
“I’ll tell you what I think I’d do. I think I’d make ’em a co-winner,” he told the TODAY show on Dec. 21. I would recommend that they go have a beautiful ceremony, which is good for the brand and good for Miss Universe, and do a co-winner.” Well, Donald, that’s the first sensible and inclusive thing that you’ve said in months. And it would be the right thing to do for Ariadna Gutiérrez –– Miss Colombia — who was actually crowned on live TV before Steve Harvey realized his mistake, and she was literally uncrowned.
The poor woman. She was blowing kisses to the crowd, with tears in her eyes, innocently believing she was Miss Universe, when her crown was unceremoniously removed from her head and her flowers were even taken away. Then, the stunned Miss Philippines learned that she in fact was the winner, and she froze on stage- she didn’t know what to do. Who would? It was one of the most monumentally awkward moments ever seen on live TV. Right up there with Kanye West grabbing Taylor Swift‘s mic after she won at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, and John Travolta misidentifying Idina Menzel at the 2014 Oscars.
Both Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach and Ariadna are beautiful, smart, accomplished women. Both are equally capable of dispatching the duties of Miss Universe to perfection. Neither of these ladies deserved the international embarrassment that befell them yesterday when Steve Harvey mistakenly announced that the first runner-up, Miss Colombia, had won. The Miss Universe organization can make an unusual move here in this highly abnormal situation: announce that both women are co-winners. Duties can be divided, and in fact, the Misses Universes could do even more as a duo, than one could accomplish alone. They can be everywhere!
That would only be good news for their fans.
Do you agree, Hollywoodlifers? Should Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia become co-Miss Universes? Let me know.
