This story just went from bad to worse. On top of awkwardly taking the crown from Miss Colombia following Steve Harvey’s major flub during the Miss Universe finale, Miss Philippines admits that she wasn’t even able to talk to her fellow contestant and friend after the show, as the runner-up was consumed with tears!
Poor Miss Philippines. What should have been one of the happiest moments of Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach‘s, 26, life ended up being a moment of unbelievable awkwardness and confusion after host Steve Harvey, 58, mistakingly announced her as the runner-up before ultimately crowning her Miss Universe 2015 in an epic TV fail. Though she felt bad enough taking the crown from Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, 21, on live TV, Pia admits that things only continued to get more painful backstage as she wasn’t even able to apologize to her fellow contestant for the unfortunate mixup. The reason? Ariadna couldn’t stop crying!
After being crowned the real winner and ultimately having to take the crown away from Ariadna, Pia revealed to Entertainment Weekly that she had tried to reach out to her backstage, but sadly, was unable to get in touch. “She was crying and then there was a crowd around her, the girls who were comforting her,” said the Miss Universe winner. “I was actually very close to her already, but I decided that maybe it was bad timing to do it now — to apologize to her for what happened. So maybe I’ll do that in the future.”
Like Ariadna, Pia revealed after the show that she too was having a hard time coming to terms with what had happened on stage. “I was confused. I wasn’t sure what was going on. I didn’t expect that to happen at all,” she told ET. Even after Steve corrected the mistake, Pia said she was hesitant to go up when her name was called, as she was afraid it was just another mistake. “I had to ask my [manager] many times like, ‘Did I really win? Am I really Miss Universe? Are you going to take the crown from me now?’ And they [said], ‘No, no, you’re really the winner,'” Pia explained.
Still, despite being completely devastated after having the crown taken away from her on live TV, Ariadna proved to be exceedingly gracious in her defeat. The 21-year-old Colombian beauty addressed the awkward mix-up in a video posted to the Miss Universe Twitter page immediately following the show. “Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy,” she says as she wipes tears from her eyes. “Thank you for voting for me.” What a beautiful woman inside and out!
HollywoodLifers, what do you think about Pia’s reaction after the show? Do you feel bad about the mixup.
