Did Steve Harvey’s Miss Universe blunder cause a riff between Filipino and Latino fans? Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach seems to think so! The pageant winner has called for peace between Filipino and Latino fans amid fears that the show’s finale flub would cause some to hold a grudge.
Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach isn’t wasting any time in her new position as Miss Universe! In her first official statement as the crowned winner, Pia reached out to the Latino community specifically as she pleaded with Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez‘s, fans to not let Steve Harvey‘s on-air slip-up affect their relationship with her Filipino fanbase. See her touching message below!
Though she may not have been directly responsible for the devastating mix-up that took place during the show’s Dec. 20 finale, Pia couldn’t help but extend a kind message to the pageant’s shocked, and likely confused, fans after the fact. “I hope I didn’t upset anybody, especially the Latino community and the fans of Miss Colombia,” said Pia in an interview with TMZ following the show. “I’m the voice of Miss Universe now, and I’d like to send my apologies for any confusion that happened. I hope this doesn’t affect your relationship with Miss Universe or your relationship with the Filipino community as well.”
Of course, Pia wasn’t the only one apologizing for the gaffe that saw Ariadna mistakenly crowned as the winner before ultimately having to hand over crown to Pia — in front of a live audience no less! After intensely apologizing for the mistake on stage, Steve then took to Facebook to offer a second apology to both the contestants. “I made a terrible mistake in announcing the wrong winner and runner-up for the Miss Universe pageant,” he wrote. “I know how much pride many countries, fans and most importantly, the contestants take in preparing for this night. I hope that you can forgive me. All contestants were amazing but I want to specifically apologize to Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines again and whole heartedly. You both represented well for your countries, families and yourselves.”
As for Ariadna, she remained incredibly gracious afterward, telling reporters, “Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy,” as she wiped tears away from her face. “Thank you for voting for me.” It was so great to see her stay so graceful despite the understandably devastating situation, and to represent both her country and organization in such a kind, beautiful way.
