Stumped on what to get this holiday season for your loved ones? If they enjoy a good book then this is the perfect gift! HollywoodLife.com got a chance to catch up with award winning author, Donald L. Miller, who spilled some major secrets about Manhattan that he reveals in his latest book!
Did you know that Fifth Avenue used to be lined with mansions, or that there was a skyscraper being built every 20 minutes in 1929? Those are just some of the incredible things you’ll learn about in Donald L. Miller‘s latest book, Supreme City: How Jazz Age Manhattan Gave Birth to Modern America. Donald is a seven-time New York Times best selling author and in our interview we got a chance to learn all about his latest masterpiece. Plus, he gave us some scoop on a film project he’s doing with Tom Hanks!
“This book focuses on Manhattan when New York became a different kind of city, a city that transmitted culture, it’s the Jazz Age in New York City,” Donald tells HollywoodLife.com. “Fifth Avenue was all mansions, all the way up to Central Park. They were all torn down [to make way for] Saks Fifth Avenue, the department stores. By 1929 they were building a skyscraper every 20 minutes.” Click here to buy Don’s book on Amazon!
But if you’re worried the book is too daunting of a task to get through because it’s a whopping 784 pages, Donald promises us not to worry…it’s a quick read! “If my old Uncle John could read it, he read about seven books in his life, and he’s read some of my books. They flow like a story, unfold like a story, it’s not dry history. I put a little card over my desk everyday that says ‘Will the reader turn the next page?’ And that’s what I want to do, is keep your interest and the only way you can do that is with characters and how the characters collide and interact.”
Some even more exciting news, Don’s book Masters Of The Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, which was published in 2007 is being turned into a 10 episode HBO series! “We are doing a film right now based on a book I did called Masters of the Air, which is about the tremendous bombing campaign over Nazi Germany. It’s produced by some unknowns … Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. It’s going to be a follow up to Band of Brothers and The Pacific. It’s going to be a 10 part, 10 hour drama, not a documentary, and we are in the final stages of script writing right now.”
He also told us that working with Tom has been incredible: “He is as real and genuine as he appears to be but he’s an extremely demanding guy. He sat us down at the beginning and said that under no uncertain terms, ‘I want this to be the best war movie ever made.'” We know it will be!
