In addition to the original trio reprising their roles in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda are also featured in the movie, director J.J. Abrams confirms. Warning: spoilers ahead!
Blink and you’ll miss them! Star Wars: The Force Awakens is full of surprises, but a brief appearance from Obi-Wan and Yoda was something we didn’t think we’d see. Director J.J. Abrams reveals how the epic cameos came about in an all-new interview!
It all happens when Rey (Daisy Ridley) comes upon Luke Skywalker’s (Mark Hamill) lightsaber and has a vision. In the sequence, she sees and hears a number of figures, including Obi-Wan and Yoda. And, yes, Ewan McGregor, Frank Oz and the late Alex Guinness were brought back for the new movie, Entertainment Weekly confirms after speaking with J.J.
“The idea of the voices was, we wanted the audience to feel – but not necessarily be presented right in your face — this idea that familiar, Force-strong voices were connecting with her. At least as well as they could,” Abrams told the outlet.
For Ewan’s Obi-Wan revival, the actor actually went into a studio to record soundbites for J.J. to use. Frank, the puppeteer and voice of Yoda, did the same, but J.J. and the film’s crew ended up using pre-existing elements. The dream sequence is emotional for all, especially with all these familiar voices coming at you at once.
“You do hear a little bit of Yoda. You hear Luke yelling out, ‘Nooo!’ from that moment in Empire. And you hear Obi-Wan at the end say, ‘Rey … these are your first steps,’” J.J. continued. “Here’s the cool part. We asked Ewan McGregor to come in and do the line. And he was awesome and we were very grateful. He was incredibly sweet and handsome, and all that stuff. Then he rode off on his motorcycle. Literally the coolest voice over actor ever.”
