During the third Democratic debate, Hillary Clinton spoke passionately about the need for gun control in the United States, and why Republicans who don’t support it are so wrong: arming more Americans isn’t going to make anyone safer from terrorism, according to Hillary!
Hillary Clinton lashed out at her GOP opponents, who have roundly insisted that the best way to fight ISIS and prevent mass shootings in the United States, is to continue to allow Americans unrestricted access to guns. Not the case, said Hillary during the third Democratic presidential debate, on December 19, the last of 2015. To Hillary, the notion of arming more Americans in order to fight off shooters just doesn’t make any sense; it’s not going to keep anyone safe.
Many of the Republican presidential candidates argue that if there were better access to guns, such as in schools and in public spaces, mass shootings and terrorism attacks could be prevented. The “good guy with a gun” theory. Hillary’s not buying it. “Guns in and of themselves will not make Americans safer,” Hillary said during the debate. “We lose 33,000 people a year already to gun violence. Arming more people…is not the appropriate response to terrorism.”
The point Hillary is driving home is that armed vigilantes aren’t the answer when it comes to fighting ISIS, especially not when the United States is in such a dire crisis already over gun-related deaths. Tensions are high and people are scared that ISIS will strike US soil, especially after the November 13 attacks on Paris, and even more frightening because of its proximity, the shooting in San Bernardino, CA. But despite her opponents’ pleas that more guns are what the Americans need to protect themselves, Hillary is trying to stress that we can’t let violence beget violence.
Donald Trump brushed off the Umpqua Community College shooting, as “these things happen,” and even said that gun control laws are responsible for school shootings. “Gun-free zones are a catastrophe,” Trump said, adding that they create “target practice for the sickos and for the mentally ill.” Ben Carson suggested that if the Jews were armed during World War II, the Holocaust may not have happened.
Hillary’s comments come after the country suffered a rash of shootings that have left scores dead. Dylann Roof shot and killed nine black people at Charleston, South Carolina’s historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in June. Vester Flanagan murdered two of his former WDBJ coworkers live on the air in August.
Chris Harper Mercer murdered nine people, leaving seven with life-threatening injuries, when he opened fired on Umpqua Community College in Oregon on October 1. After that horrible tragedy, there were two more fatal shootings on a school campus: one dead at Northern Arizona University and another at Texas Southern University in Houston.
