The Force was strong for Conan O’Brien, as he welcomed the cast and director of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ on Dec. 17. It was so amazing to see the entire team and hear their tales about filming the highly anticipated movie, now we want to see it even more!
The cast of the biggest movie in sci-fi geekdom appeared on the Dec. 17 episode of Conan. Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie brought the intergalactic battle between the Resistance and the First Order to Conan O’Brien, and of course, director J.J. Abrams was there! We got to hear from both the films vets as well as newcomers about what the Star Wars experience was like.
Conan kicked things off with an interview with Harrison and J.J. and got Harrison to reveal that he wanted his iconic character Han Solo killed off in The Return Of The Jedi. He thought “the best utility for the character would be to sacrifice himself to the greater ideal,” and we’re SO glad that didn’t happen, because we bet he never in a million years thought he’d be reprising the role. He even joked about the broken leg he suffered while filming saying, “It wasn’t so bad, cause I was the center of attention.”
As to whether J.J. was nervous to direct Harrison the helmer joked, “It’s a legendary actor in an iconic role and I thought what the Hell am I doing here and game faced.” But Harrison in all seriousness said, “He was right 99 percent of the time…and extraordinarily well suited for this job.” Wow, that’s HUGE praise coming from such a superstar!
Carrie revealed there was so much secrecy about the script, the actors were only allowed to read their lines for their particular scenes and give the script back. Even Oscar and Adam – who had co-starred in a previous film together – had no idea each other had been cast in the film until they showed up for the full cast a table read. Such secrecy!
Newcomer John shared that the first time he held a light saber, “it was cold and quite heavy and a religious experience,” while his interview co-hort Daisy revealed she made a major faux pas in her first scene with Harrison aboard the Millenium Falcon, when she stepped into his pilot seat and he clearly let her know it was HIS. “It was genuinely mortifying,” the movie’s new heroine laughed. Oscar shared a hilarious encounter where he asked real-life pilot Harrison what he should do to make flying an X-wing fighter look more real, to which Harrsion advised him, “It’s fake…and it’s a movie.” ZING!
