Amber Rose is opening up in a BIG way. In a new interview, the model gets candid about being blamed after she got sexually assaulted in middle school, and it’s quite the shocking story.
She’s a highly empowering women these days, but Amber Rose hasn’t always had the platform to stand up for her rights. In fact, before she had a voice, the 32-year-old had a really rough time, including a horrifying sexual assault experience that she was blamed for when she was just in 7th grade — and she’s spilling all about it in a brand new interview.
“This boy stuck his hand all the way up my skirt. I was sitting on the edge of the stage in the auditorium, and he sat down next to me and put his hand up my skirt,” she told MTV News. “I went to the principal and I told her that I felt extremely violated. I couldn’t believe that he had touched me like that. And she blamed me. She said, ‘You shouldn’t even be wearing a skirt like that.’ Obviously, in the seventh grade, my skirt was not that short, but even if it was, it shouldn’t give him the right to shove his hand up my skirt.”
Now that she’s a strong, powerful adult, Amber has had no problem telling off slut shamers: She’s written a book, held a SlutWalk, and proudly wore a bodysuit that had all the horrible names people have called her splashed all over it to the VMAs. But it wasn’t always like that.
“I always wanted to promote girl power, even when I was younger, but at that time, I didn’t have a voice,” she admitted. “Growing up in my neighborhood, I was raised to be a slut shamer. I didn’t know any better. But then I started to put myself in their shoes — that’s something we don’t do as women. This year, I feel like I found my voice. I was constantly defending myself, like, ‘No I didn’t sleep with that guy. No I’m not a whore. Don’t look at me like that.”‘ And one day, I woke up, and I was like, ‘Maybe I am — and that’s cool.”
In fact, it was her divorce from Wiz Khalifa in 2014 that really made Amber realize she couldn’t let this stuff go anymore. “I really saw the double standards,” she explained. “Wiz would be with a different girl every day and get photographed out with girls at the club. I would be on a date with a guy and it was like, ‘You’re a horrible mother! You’re a f**ked up person! You’re a whore! That’s why Wiz left you you f***ing slut!’ And I was like, ‘Damn, am I not allowed to live?'” You tell ’em, girl! Check out Amber’s book RIGHT HERE.
