YASSS! Sia dropped her brand spanking new single ‘Cheap Thrills’ on Dec. 16 and while it may have originally been written for Rihanna, Sia totally kills it all on her own. Listen here!
Get ready, because we just found your new favorite party jam! Sia, 39, released the fourth single off of her new album This Is Acting on Beats 1 on Dec. 16 and it’s everything we hoped it would be and more. With its getting-hyped-for-the-weekend vibe, it’s hard to imagine why Rihanna, 27, — the singer who was originally intended to belt the track — would pass on it and yet, we’re kind of happy she did. Honestly, we dare you not to listen to this song and want to get up and dance. In what is hands down the poppiest release from the album yet, the notably “face-less” singer waxes poetic about not needing money to go out and have a blast on the weekends. “I don’t need no money/ As long as I can feel the beat/ I don’t need no money/ As long as I keep dancing,” she sings, while a layered backing voice shouts “I love cheap thrills!”
Like every other track on her upcoming album, “Cheap Thrills” was originally intended for another artist — in this case, Rihanna, and it’s easy to see why. The carefree jam blends lyrics like,“It’s Saturday and it won’t be long ’til I / Hit the dance floor / Hit the dance floor,” with tropical house beats, not unlike the “BBHMM” singer’s earlier hits. And yet, Rihanna ultimately decided to pass on the track, giving Sia full reign to make it her own.
“We did actually send it to her, but they passed on it, and then I just couldn’t stop listening to it in the car,” Sia explained in an interview with Rolling Stone. “There’s something really uplifting about it that put me in a good mood, and I would just pretend it wasn’t me singing. It felt very summer and fun, and I was like, ‘I’ll put that on there.’” And thank the musical gods that she did because it’s absolute perfection!
“Cheap Thrills” comes just weeks after Sia dropped her far more emotional single, “One Million Bullets.” Like Adele‘s “Hello,” the ballad feels heavy, with Sia singing about taking one million bullets and completely giving up her life for her betrothed. She does it effortlessly however, in a way that makes complete and total sense and will resonate with anyone who is or has ever been in love. Clearly, “Cheap Thrills” couldn’t have come at a better time.
