Uh-oh! It looks like Bar Refaeli has just landed herself in some serious hot water! The Israeli supermodel has been arrested for allegedly failing to claim a whole LOT of her income — like millions of dollars worth! Click here for the details!
This is crazy shocking! Supermodel Bar Refaeli is known around the world for her insanely good looks, top fashion campaigns and yes, for once dating Leonardo DiCaprio, but according to this new report, she may soon be known for something else entirely: her criminal record! The newlywed was reportedly arrested and brought in for questioning on Dec. 16 after allegedly evading millions of dollars worth of taxes in her native Israel. Yikes!
This does not look good for Bar. The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover girl was arrested and brought in for questioning after Israeli authorities visited her mother’s home as part of an undercover investigation. The supermodel was suspected of allegedly lying about where she lived to avoid paying taxes on millions of dollars’ worth of income, according to Agence France-Presse. The investigation further revealed that Bar had been suspected of receiving more than $257,000 in free benefits, including luxury apartments, cars and “celebrity discounts,” that she never reported.
To make matters worse, Bar’s mother, Zipora, was also arrested, with Israeli’s Tax Authority estimating the unreported income from abroad at “dozens of millions of shekels.” The report reveals that Bar had been registering luxury apartment rentals under both her mother and brother’s names to avoid paying taxes on properties, as Israeli citizens who are not residents are exempted from reporting to tax authorities on income from outside the country.
Bar and her mother were first suspected of tax evasion after an undercover investigation revealed a contract between the supermodel and the management of a luxury complex in Tel Aviv, according to which gossip columns would receive “leaks” regarding her residency there to promote, the Tax Authority reports.
However, this is not the first time the supermodel has used loopholes in Israeli law to her advantage. In 2003, she married a friend of her father’s, only to divorce him a short while later, in order to evade her two years of mandatory military service.
Bar and her mother are currently out on bail, but were forced to deposit their passports and are not allowed to leave Israel without permission for 180 days. Let’s hope those luxury apartment rentals were worth it.
