It’s been nearly 20 years since ‘The First Wives Club’ became the first ever ‘squad goals’ — and now the ladies are back together.
Brace yourself, men. Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton are getting back together for a new Netflix movie, Divanation, a comedy about a singing group that’s forced to get back together after a 30 year hiatus. Well we’re freaking out a bit about the actual group of ladies getting back together — the original three women from 1996’s movie, The First Wives Club.
Netflix’s original movie, first reported by our sister site, Deadline, does not yet have a release date but just the leads are sure to draw quite the audience to the streaming site. (You can re-watch The First Wives Club here!)
Now, we never got an actual sequel to The First Wives Club, which people were not too thrilled about — everyone was wondering why we didn’t see the ex-wives get revenge. However, it was because the ladies’ felt the money wasn’t the same as it would be for men.
“We were all women of a certain age, and everyone took a cut in salary to do it so the studio could make what it needed,” Goldie said in the March 2015 issue of Harvard Business Review. “We all took a smaller back end than usual and a much smaller front end, and we ended up doing incredibly well. The movie was hugely successful. It made a lot of money. We were on the cover of Time magazine, but two years later, when the studio came back with a sequel, they wanted to offer us exactly the same deal. We went back to ground zero. Had three men come in there, they would have upped their salaries without even thinking about it. But the fear of women’s movies is embedded in the culture.”
Goldie also added that she’s selective with her roles, because while it’s important to her to be entertaining, it’s also about giving “something substantive to talk about.” Well apparently she found it with Divanation. Netflix has no problem giving these ladies what they want! Are you excited?
