After the frightening announcement that nearly 900 schools were being closed in Los Angeles due to a bomb threat, officials have revealed that New York City schools have also received an identical note. The schools will remain open and here’s why.
Mayor Bill de Blasio has revealed that NYC schools have also received a threat on Dec. 15, but won’t be closing schools. This comes on the heals of the Los Angeles public schools being abruptly shut down after the police received a credible bomb threat against the nation’s second-largest school system.
New York City officials declared the new threat to be a hoax. After they received the electronic note that led to the massive closure of the LA schools on Dec. 15, they investigated it right away but no reason to close the schools. Bill de Blasio stated that he was “absolutely convinced” there was no danger to schoolchildren in New York, according to the Associated Press. William Bratton, the New York Police Commissioner, stated to the press that he thought Los Angeles officials overreacted to the entire situation by deciding to close the school system. He also stated that the person behind the threatening note claimed to be a jihadist, yet he or she made distinguishing errors. It was clear the person was a prankster, according to the official.
“We are very comfortable that this is not a credible threat,” Bratton said, adding that the authorities were “concerned with people overreacting to it.” He also revealed that the NYPD was investigating the threat with the FBI, a joint terrorism task force and Los Angeles police, according to abc News. The threat towards all the schools was made electronically, and it was explicitly “to students at schools,” stated Ramon C. Cortines, superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District. He also told the press “some of the details talked about backpacks and other packages.”
