This wasn’t the only award he won this week.
On Thursday, December 10, Derrick won the Doak Walker Award as the country’s top running back, as well as the Maxwell Award. He’s the first running back since 2002 to win that award! Additionally, he’s the first player to win both the Heisman and Maxwell since Ron Dayne in 1999. This guy is the real deal!
He was a high school football star, too.
Is it any shock that Derrick dominated the Yulee High School football field? As a freshman running back, he conquered 2,465 yards and 26 scores! He was named a first-team All-Coast winner in both his sophomore and junior years, and received the title of National High School Player of the Year as a senior. He set the Florida high school record as a senior with 327.8 yards per game as a senior, and 4,261 yards and 55 touchdowns at the end of the season. Damn!
His beloved grandmother helped raise him.
Derrick was born to teenage parents in Yulee, Florida; his grandmother, Gladys played a large part in raising him. Unfortunately, she has been hospitalized for eight weeks for complications from having fluid in her lungs. Derrick’s family gathered in the hospital to join her in watching the ceremony on TV so she wouldn’t miss her accomplished grandson (whom she nicknamed “Shocka”) have his big moment. And it’s a large family that helped cheer on Derrick. He has 12 aunts and 25 cousins! And every single one of the them were wearing his jersey.
The NFL is in Derrick’s future.
Though Derrick has kept mum about what he’s going to do next, it’s likely that the NFL is going to try to court him. Whether or not he’ll finish with Bama or run off with the NFL is up in the air!
