The Duggars are back and they’ve brought the drama. On their new special, Jill and Jessa Duggar put it all out there for fans and revealed what life has been like since their brother Josh’s sex scandals.
The Duggars have returned, minus Josh. On Dec. 13, the former 19 Kids and Counting stars Jessa and Jill Duggar kicked off their own three-part special on TLC, Jill & Jessa: Counting On, with the first episode. Amidst celebrating babies and big moves, the girls used their special to share their emotional experiences in the wake of their brother’s scandals going public. It was intense.
A lot has changed since we last saw the Duggar family on TV. Jill and her husband Derick Dillard not only welcomed their first child together, Israel, but now their little family is ready for a whole new journey. They’ve decided to take part in a mission trip to Central America — where they will spend the next year. Because of the violence that is happening there, it’s a dangerous move for Jill and Derek, but he declared that it is their true calling.
As for Jessa, she and her husband Ben Seewald are expecting their first bundle of joy together. In this episode, we see the excitement they’re experiencing as they prepare for their newborn’s arrival. Before the baby was born on Nov. 5, Jessa and Ben admitted that they kept their baby’s gender secret until the birth. Although the family didn’t know they were expecting a boy, they had a lot of fun showering Jessa and Ben with gifts and helping them prepare in any way they could.
While the girls have plenty to celebrate, they couldn’t get through their special without discussing their brother Josh. Jill and Jessa were revealed in June to be victims of Josh’s molestation scandal when he was a teen, and it was an incident that both girls found difficult to speak out about. “Everybody makes their own decisions and everybody makes their own choices but they’re not the only ones that suffer the consequences,” Jill tells the camera. “We really had to work through it because, as a victim, you’ve already worked through that and dealt with it. And you don’t want it rubbed in your face all the time.”
It was clearly tough for Jill and Jessa to be so open, but they ultimately wanted to emphasize how much the situation brought their family closer and made their faith even stronger. They also gave their siblings Jeremiah, Jinger, John-David, Joseph, Joy-Anna, and Jana the chance to speak about it, which made their point even clearer. With everything Jill, Jessa, and their siblings all said, Jill summarized it flawlessly. “Going forward we will come out of this fire, so to speak, stronger as a family unit.”
