This is so sweet! For the very first time, Kate Middleton has worn the late Princess Diana’s favorite tiara to a gala event. The Duchess wore the diamond and pearl Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara Dec. 8, which was beloved by the mother-in-law she never got to meet.
Kate Middleton, 33, is paying the most touching tribute to Prince William‘s mother, the late Princess Diana. She wore Di’s all-time favorite tiara to the Queen’s annual Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace, which marks the first time she’s donned a headpiece worn by the beloved royal. She already sports Diana’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring, but that was a gift to her from when William proposed.
We are SO loving the Duchess’ amazing tribute to Princess Diana! She was photographed wearing the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara to a formal reception on Dec. 8, and she looks just as regal as when Diana sported it at numerous events throughout the 1980’s. The glamorous diamond and pearl headpiece was highlighted thanks to Kate’s swept back brunette locks, which she appeared to pair with a light blue Alexander McQueen gown that she wore to the very same reception back in 2013. Oh that discount Duchess, always the recycler!
This is only the fourth time ever that Kate has worn a tiara to a formal event. She donned the Cartier Halo tiara for her 2011 wedding to Prince William, and has twice worn the Lotus Flower tiara — first to the Diplomat’s reception in 2013 and again in October for a state banquet between Queen Elizabeth II and China’s president, Xi Jinping
The headpiece has an amazing history, as it was originally made for Queen Mary over a century ago in 1914 from pearls and diamonds already in the family’s possession. Mary then left the tiara to Queen Elizabeth II, who wore it frequently in her younger years as Monarch before Diana made it iconic. Princess Di wore it over a dozen times while married to Prince Charles, and it always looked so lovely atop her golden blonde hair. It’s such a shame that Diana never got to meet the amazing woman that her son fell in love with. We’re sure Di would have absolutely adored Kate!
