Nobody puts Baby on TV! Well, unless you’re ABC… because the network just confirmed they are remaking ‘Dirty Dancing’ as a musical, and Abigail Breslin will be the new Baby.
Yes, it’s true: one of the most beloved romantic drama’s of the 80’s is coming to a television set near you as a remake. Dirty Dancing, which was released in 1987 to incredible fandemonium, has been given the green light by ABC networks to be turned into a television movie musical, confirms EW. Hmm.
Dirty Dancing remakes have not had much success in the past, especially with the 2004 sequel titled Havana Nights. However, given the recent spike in ratings during a musical and/or play on other networks, ABC is really excited to bring Baby and Johnny to life. Sadly, the role of Johnny — originated by Patrick Swayze — has yet to be cast.
The TV movie musical version of the film does not have a release date just yet, but the report confirms it will be approximately three hours long. Music will be done by Adam Anders and Peer Astrom, both of whom worked on Glee, while Andy Blankenbuehler from Broadway’s Hamilton will choreograph.
Hey, at the very least you have to admit that you’re intrigued by the idea, no?
