President Obama addressed the nation from the Oval Office and let the people of the United States know something important: ISIS will NOT win. A no-nonsense speech from POTUS tackled the pressing issue of what to do after San Bernardino, promising that we will overcome the threat of terrorism. See what else he said below.
In a rare address from the Oval Office (something he hasn’t done in five years) on December 6, President Obama spoke definitively about terrorism, and the plan of action after the massacre in San Bernardino carried out by two ISIL supporters. It was an incredible speech that assuaged the fears of so many worrying about ISIL infiltrating the United States, with the president expressing how we can work together to prevail over the threats.
President Obama’s Oval Office address was expected to be a frank and to the point statement about terrorism, and that was definitely the case. He updated the nation on what happened in San Bernardino, where 14 people died and 21 were injured after two terrorists opened fire; they were later revealed as ISIS supporters, and the organization praised them as “martyrs.” Going into the speech, many knew that ISIS didn’t order that directive, but the fear was about what would happen following the attack — and what the government was doing to address it.
After declaring that the attack on San Bernardino was an act of terrorism, President Obama said, “We will overcome it. We will destroy ISIL and any other organization that tries to harm us.” He called for Americans not to turn against one another and demanded that we not let this fight be defined as a war between America and Islam, as ISIL does not speak for Islam. “We must enlist Muslim communities as some of our strongest allies rather than push them away with suspicion and hate,” he said.
The president added that we must remember Muslim Americans are our friends and our neighbors, as well as men and women in uniform willing to die in defense of our country. He stressed that no matter who you are or where you come from, you are equal in the eyes of God and the law. President Obama also made sure to declare that America will prevail, and “Freedom is more powerful than fear.”
President Obama reiterated his conviction that ISIL will be destroyed, and that the United States’ strong convictions will help it persevere over the threat of terrorism. What a remarkable speech! It’s clear that he’s passionate and confident about this issue, and has a plan in place. USA, all the way!
