During NBC’s live production of ‘The Wiz,’ one question had fans freaking out basically the entire time: where the heck was Toto? We have the answer to this very important mystery!
NBC completely crushed its December 3 production of The Wiz Live!, as did the entire cast– however, one cast member was noticeably missing for much of the nearly three-hour show: Dorothy’s doggy pal, Toto! Many were wondering if there was some sort of puppy mishap preventing the pooch from basking in the spotlight, however, we know the real reason why the furry actor took an early exit stage right!
It turns out, there was no massive disaster backstage nor doggy diva behavior which lead to Toto being minimally featured in the classic musical. Actually, it’s because that was simply how the part was written! We will explain the confusion.
Ya see, The Wiz Live! closely followed the original 1974 Broadway production of The Wiz. In this musical, Toto the dog really was only written into the very beginning and very end (which makes sense for a stage musical, as there are tons of tricky variables when dealing with pups on stage). However, many people are more familiar with The Wizard of Oz, as well as the film adaptation of The Wiz than the original musical, both of which more prominently featured Toto.
So, now that we understand where the misunderstanding came from, we can LOL– just a little!– at some of the hysteria which broke out online, amongst those who thought there was some doggy conspiracy at play! In fact, people were so concerned about Toto’s whereabouts that the hashtag #WhereIsToto literally started to trend. Okay guys, we love dogs too but, ya know, chill out a little!
What did you think of Toto’s lack of screen time? Do you wish the pup had been more heavily featured?
