1. He got his start on Broadway
Immediately after he wrapped up his Masters program at Yale’s Drama school, David landed a role as Jackie Robinson in the Broadway musical The First. It was short-lived, but he received a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor, and went on to star in the Broadway production of Dreamgirls.
2. His big break was on a variety show
Despite working mostly in theater, David soon got recognition for his comedic skills via appearances in a few cult films, and he was cast in the sketch show In Living Color. The variety series was a hit in the ratings, and even won an Emmy Award. David portrayed a series of characters that became pretty well known on the show, and it helped launch his comedy career.
3. He’s been in TV shows and movies that you’ve heard of
David has had roles in movies like Jumanji, Boomerang, Stuart Little and Tyler Perry Presents Peeples, as well as television series’ like Bones, Law And Order: SVU, Happy Endings, My Wife & Kids and Life With Bonnie. Not too shabby! He’s also done stand-up for Comedy Central and appeared in several episodes of the network’s show Crank Yankers.
4. He was on ‘Dancing With The Stars’!
The 59-year-old earned enough cred to be cast on the eighth season of Dancing With The Stars, for which he was partnered with pro Kym Johnson. Although he was successful in getting in great shape on the show — he lost 26 pounds! — he was eliminated in the fifth week of competition.
5. He has awesome hobbies
David is a huge fan of food, cooking and food blogging, and he even got to star on an episode as a judge on Cutthroat Kitchen in 2015. He’s also experienced in taekwondo and has a black belt in the sport, along with an avid obsession with motorcycles.
